St Joseph's Wood, Aysgarth Falls, Wensleydale

The grid reference for St. Joseph's Wood is 017890, previously it was known as the Riddings Field. The land is well situated, adjacent to Freeholders's Wood, an ancient coppiced wood and just minutes from Aysgarth Falls on the River Ure. 100 acres of green fields, including 30 acres of young woodland, which was officially opened by Sir Chris Bonnington as a Millennium Project on 13 April 1999 after 11,500 trees had been planted.

It is an ideal secluded green-field campsite. On site mains water is available. Vehicular access is via Low Lane, Carperby. Foot access is through Freeholder's Wood along the signposted, public footpath. The area is suitable for walking, orienteering, rambling, mountain biking etc.

The wood consists of broadleaved, deciduous trees and was created primarily as a wildlife area with the benefit of its own natural spring and pond. Within the woodland there is a SSSI of botanical interest. There are stunning views of Wensleydale from the high knolls within the wood.
